Mrs. Mary Gillis is in her 8th year of teaching at the Academy of St. Matthias the Apostle School and her 27th year of teaching. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a BS in Education. She taught at High Point High School in her first 4 years of teaching, She stopped teaching to raise a family, worked in the business world for many years, and returned to teaching at Concordia Lutheran School in Hyattsville in 1997 (her Alma Mater). When that school closed, she was happy to be hired by St. Matthias where she has found a new “home.” .She has taught all levels of high school, Grade 6 homeroom, 7th and 8th grade literature and grammar, 5-8 math, and is currently 5th grade homeroom teacher and 6th math. She sponsors the Drama Club and Gods Rods, loves to read when she has time, enjoys vacations at the beach with extended family, loves to share her faith with the students, and claims that being around the students at St.Matthias is the best antidote to old age.
